“I was visiting on holiday to Normandy Beach from Florida, United States? by way of London, England. On my drive down to the Dover Passenger Ferry, Dover, England, my eyeglasses snapped in half. My spare set of eyeglasses were in the United States. I was only going to be in France for 4 four days but I was also driving. It was arriving in Calais, France at 11:30 Saturday morning. According to Google, many optometrists were either closed or closed for lunch. So I found one that was opening at 14:00 so we went to a café near them while we waited. Walking from shuttle bus stop, we walked by Générale D'Optique. They were open! We walked in and tried to explain to the staff what had happened but our French was limited. I showed Pauline my glasses to see if they could fix them. She shook her head no. She motioned to follow her as she looked for frames that might fit my lenses. She found a new set of frames that were a little narrower in width but also with a slightly smaller lens size. She brought me to to Jean-Phillippe. He told me to give them one-hour and he would have my replacement glasses ready. He explained he had a machine on-site to cut the lens.
It would cost me over €150 to express ship my glasses from the USA or a few hundred Euros and a probably a few days to get new replacement glasses. They charged me €50 for the replacement frames which included the cutting of the lenses.
We had lunch at a café one block away from the shop. We walked back a few minutes early, and the glasses were ready and they worked great for the month and a half until I was able to get them replaced in the US. I will keep them as emergency back up glasses. (And will always travel with a spare).
I have to also add that not only did Jean-Phillippe fix my glasses, he was able to contact a taxi-driver for us to take us to Hertz Rental Car in Calais. We were going to walk there but it would be a bit of a hike with suitcases.
I would have not enjoyed my brief visit to France as well were it not for my replacement glasses. I have been wanting to visit Normandie for years. I could not have appreciated this trip without the assistance the staff of Générale D'Optique'
